Dia. 1

In these recent covid times the sense of what the future holds and not knowing what is coming down the line is at the fore-front of our minds. It is easy to get whipped away by a sea of anxiety and fear with all the change and uncertainty that is existing in our world right now and as a parent myself, I often reflect on how this experience will impact my son as he seeks to make sense of his world.

We must however come back to ourselves and realise whilst we perhaps feel a lack of control, we never had control in the first place, merely the illusion of control. Its a question of where we allow our locus of control to operate from (see dia. 1). When it is from within us we take back our personal power. In that power we have a choice in every moment how we respond to covid or indeed every other situation that comes into our awareness.

Challenges and disruption hit us all throughout our lives. There may be a sense that they are more abrupt or impactful in our current climate as we witness greater divides in our society as old paradigms being to break down. When external events happen outside of us, we can not control them only how we react to them. In other words, the future is not what happens to us but how we respond to what those happenings.

We create our own reality. Our thoughts are an illusion and yet they are the current reality we live, but just like we can change our thoughts, we can change our reality and in turn the future. The choice really is ours. The universe is calling each and every one of us to step up and do the right thing to transform our future be it in our relationships, our parenting, our leadership, our community.

“Reality is an illusion, albeit a very persistent one.” Albert Einstein

Take a moment to observe the different ways in which people around you have chosen to handle this turmoilic event in their own personal way and the ripple effect their decision has created around them. We can choose to retreat, turn away or close down to these events or we can turn up, open up and look at what our world is wanting us to invite to learn, to know, to act on?

How we experience our reality is a reflection of our internal world and the way in which we make meaning through our various filters of past experience, thoughts and beliefs. Taking back our personal power allows us to see what we truly can control and what we can not. It shines a light on what we can take responsibility for and releases the rest. Its empowering to know that I am doing the best I can within my own power and if I’m not, then I need to question that and explore my own thinking. I might ask myself some questions like: Where am I playing the victim? Where am I giving my power away? Where am I playing small? How is that serving me?

For myself personally I have always felt that this global calamity is mothers natures call to us, humanity, to wake up, and look at what we are doing to our world. According research taken from Otto Scharmer’s work, we use 1.5 times the regeneration capacity of planet earth and it is simply untenable to think we can continue in this way. I feel called upon to do what I can to re-address the balance, in my own way and within my own ability. I am a merely a microcosm in our macrocosm but thats okay for I know I am part of something bigger. There are many that take the same approach and it is this growing collective that will enhance the ripple effect and bring about a collective shift do create a better world for us all.

So dear reader, I invite you to play with the following ideas;

💡Get present to this moment, and the next, and the next, next – adopt a mindfulness practice to support you with this.

💡Become aware of your thoughts, inner dialogue with that internal critic. Catch when that dialogue is not helpful even hurtful and change those words to something more supportive and equally true.

💡Become curious to what we could be co-creating in the form of a better world. Look for evidence of that in your everyday experience.

💡Become empathic – really listen to another, in doing so put yourself in their shoes. The gift of listening is so underrates in todays world.

💡Have courage – to do the right thing, even when no one is looking. Speak up for your unique voice counts and is very necessary at this time.

“In a gentle way, you can shake the world” Mahatma Gandhi

And what about all the anxiety and fear – let it go! Where attention goes, energy flows so why not choose for the light, for the beauty in our world, for taking back your personal power and spreading love, happiness, peace and joy and just see what comes back to you in multitudes – you might just be surprised!
